Create Your Writer Platform

A writer’s platform is like an art portfolio for writing. It is a place where you can showcase your work, interact with your audience and get feedback on your characters. In today’s world of social media engagement being able to reach your audience and potential new readers is vitally important.

In fact many publishers want evidence that your stories and novels have an existing audience base.

Is Setting Up a Website Difficult?

The platform you set up doesn’t need to be sophisticated or too technical. Most people just want to read your content without distractions from adverts or fancy pop up messages.

A simple blog site, that allows you to write your own content, is easy to establish and can be done in just a few minutes. This article explains the best tools for the job and guides you through the whole process.

Relax and read on – this is just for you.

Writer’s Platform

One of the requirements for a writer today, especially one who is looking to get work published or shared, is to have a suitable writer’s platform. There are a number of ways in which this can be achieved with the easiest and most common method being to use some form of social media.

Whilst social media is one way in which to do that, ideally social media should aim to take potential readers to the hub of your writing activity – your website.

This may seem like a daunting task, to set up and manage a website. However a simple blog site, running on a WordPress theme can be managed very easily. There aren’t any great costs associated with it either so it is now a cheap and easy process to get up and running.

For many writers the easiest option when developing a platform, is to design a blog site. This will enable you to promote your content in whatever way you want, as well as allowing visitors to comment on or interact with your content. It is also a great way to promote your writing style and showcase your work, a bit like an art portfolio.

Building a Website

Building a website has never been easier than it is today. If you want to try building your own site for free and receive ongoing support and tutorials, then I would strongly recommend the company that I use which is Wealthy Affiliate . They operate a free domain site called siterubix which you can also use at no cost if you don’t own your own domain name at the moment.

If you are interested in purchasing your own domain name and hosting it with siterubix you can register through the Wealthy Affiliate programme and receive these additional services.

Using WordPress

Most blog sites use WordPress as the platform upon which you can build and manage your site, and siterubix also does the same. The advantage of WordPress is that it is widely used and so many plugins are constantly being developed to work on this platform.

I have also covered more specific topics related to WordPress in other blogs and discussions, such as how to get started with wordpress. It does take a while to get used to the format of WordPress but there are also 1,000s of templates and web site designs that you can choose from to personalise your site and fit your writing genre or interest area.

Using Images

A writer’s platform naturally focuses on the written word, but we live nowadays in an image orientated world. The biggest growing social media sites are Pinterest and Instagram, both of which have been designed to share images rather than words.

It is important if you are going to share your work on these sites, and also on Twitter, Tsu and Facebook, that you include photographs or other images in your content.

They say a picture says a thousand words, so in blogging terms –

"you need a picture, in order
to get people to read a
thousand words"

Receiving Support for your Web or Blog Site

I mentioned earlier the importance of having support as you begin your web site development. There is probably nothing as frustrating as being defeated by technology, if nothing else it is certainly a great way to lose a lot of time (time that could be more fruitfully be spent writing content!)

I would advise accessing support in some form or other to help you along your journey. There are plenty of free hosting companies for your website but unless you are very proficient and familiar with website development and blogging, then I would suggest either investing in a paid provider or using free versions of support sites.

I have already mentioned the benefits of wealthy affiliate as a hosting platform. However it also enables you to receive on line community support, as well as technical support through their full premium membership programme. You can find this as part of their Digital Marketing University programme.

The online community is definitely one of the main advantages of this site and its model of training, especially compared to some other sites that I have been involved with over the years. You can also access my own mentoring support and have full access to PM me directly for help if you sign up through my own referral link, which is an added bonus at not extra cost.

Online Community Support

The online community means that answer to queries are usually dealt with very quickly and by people who are working on the very same issues themselves. The cost of paying membership to sites such as these is an added cost. However it needs to be weighed up against the amount of time that you can afford to waste trying to find the answers yourself, instead of writing and promoting your own content.

In the end I consider it the same as outsourcing my technical support and it lets me focus  on what I enjoy the most, which is writing. The membership is also free if you only access the first module of training and you get free hosting on a sub domain for your website, so definitely worth checking out as one of your options.

Building a Writer’s Platform Rather than a Technical Website

I have found that quite a lot of the advice available on building websites for businesses, tends to focus either on the technical side of design or on marketing a  product.  Whilst this is also true for writers there is more to it than that.

To build up your audience and writer’s platform you will have to spend a lot of time and effort writing and posting to the site, so it makes sense to design something that will be enjoyable and fun to be with. It will become like a new relationship in your life so make it for you.

Summary

Building a writer’s platform or blog doesn’t have to be difficult, and you don’t have to do it alone. Use a well established and trusted platform such as the ones I have recommended  here and you won’t have to worry about site crashes, losing all your content or the company suddenly closing and all your material lost.

So how do you create an easy writer’s platform – follow these three top tips

  1. Register at Wealthy Affiliate and follow the step by step tutorials that are available, even as a free member to start your website.
  2. Follow the blog here and sign up for my newsletter to keep up to date with everything blogging related.
  3. Start writing content that tells readers about your work and which will build a following.

I would love to hear any other ideas that you might have to share with readers on how you promote your work and successes you’ve had through your own writing platforms.
